Top 10 Toys for Preschool Boys

Christmas is just around the corner, and if you’re anything like me, you’re starting to think about what to get your kids for the big day. I decided long ago to do a gift guide for the holidays, so it just made sense to join in with huge group of other bloggers to bring you a HUGE gift guide for the holidays. We’re joining together to bring you 50+ Gift Guides for Kids!

I want to share with you the toys we love the most around here. In this list, you won’t find many toys that are flashy or make lots of noise. I like simple toys that leave room for lots of open ended play. Even though these toys are for preschoolers, you will find that they will grow with your child and will be played with for years!

At the bottom of the list is my 3 year old’s wish list for this year, so you can see the toys we wish we had!
Wooden Trains: We play with trains. Every. Single. Day. Seriously, we have a train track set up in our playroom at all times. We started out with a small Thomas Wooden Railway set and then added on with some great Brio sets. The Brio Rail and Road Loading Set is our favorite!

Blocks: We own several different types of blocks, but J’s favorites are his Lego Duplo, Wooden Blocks, and Giant Building Blocks. They are used for different types of building and pretend play, and they all get a lot of use around here!

Little People: We have recently found the greatness of Little People. We have the Airplane, School Bus, and we just got the Batcave! These are serious fun and are really great for all sorts of pretend play scenes.

Cars and Signs: I used these Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Vehicles & Traffic Signs in my play therapy room when I was doing children’s counseling, and I knew that I wanted to have them in my home for my own kids. They are super sturdy and realistic. We set up roads and towns all the time with these.

Tools: J likes to pretend to fix things around the house like his Daddy does, so he uses his Black And Decker Junior Power Tools all the time! We have the workbench and he uses it some, but mostly he likes just the tools. Last year, he got this great Battat Take Apart Airplane. It comes with a drill and three bits that are used to assemble and disassemble the airplane. It’s really neat, and J likes it a lot!

Big Metal Dump Truck: We’ve had a dump truck like this one for almost two years now and J has played with it every single day. Seriously. This is by far his favorite toy of all time. He pushes it around all over the place and it’s always carrying his latest creations or favorite things.

Balance Bike: We bought J his Strider No Pedal Balance Bike for his birthday in May. It took him a few months to really figure it out, but now he rides that bike all over the neighborhood.   He can glide and balance so well, it’s really fun to watch.  Hopefully he can go straight to the big bike and skip training wheels all together!

Playdough: J wasn’t really a fan of playdough until he got these great construction sets. We have the Grinding Gravel Yard Set, Chip The Cutter, and Rolland The Steam Roller. Now, he plays with playdough at least once a week!

Easel: J, like a lot of boys, doesn’t sit and create very often.  He needs to be on the go and using his whole body in order to be engaged in something. So we bought him this Easel so that he can stand and use his whole body to create. It’s certainly helped him to bring out his inner artist.

So that’s it, our Top 10 Toys for Preschool Boys. Below are a few toys that are on J’s wishlist this year. What toys would you suggest for preschool boys?

    • We love, love, love the balance bike! Totally worth the money. Hopefully the gears will end up under the tree this year.

  2. Great list! Have to say we have quite a few of the toys listed — wood trains are a huge hit with preschool boys! And blocks — you just have to have a few different types!

  3. Thank you so much for putting together this list and sharing it with us! I have a 3 year old son too, and some of these sound right up his alley (I’m going to check for the road sign toy on Amazon). I have recently decided to embrace the fact that good toys make for more enjoyable parenting and it was perfect timing for this post :).
