Baby Christmas Shakers

I really like making toys for my kids, especially baby toys.  I find that they are usually very engaging, simple, and less expensive than store bought baby toys.    Baby E’s  discovery bottles I made a few months ago have been a huge hit around here.   They are some of his favorite toys.

Since it’s Christmas, I decided to make a few Christmassy discovery bottles for him.  However, I didn’t have a single plastic bottle in the house.  But, I did have these leftover baby food containers.

I put red, green, and white pom poms in one, red and green rainbow rice in another, and red and white glass gems in the last.  I used a few drops of super glue to keep the lids on.

He loved playing with these, especially the one filled with glass gems.  My guess is that he likes it because it makes more noise than the other two.

He shook and shook, and examined each one.  Not only are these shakers visually stimulating, but aurally stimulating too.  He felt the different weights of the containers, watched the beads and rice move around inside.  He heard the difference in the glass gems and rice, and the silence of the pom poms.

I wasn’t so sure about these containers when I made them, but discovered that they are actually really great.  They are a great size and shape for little hands to grasp and shake.   Sometimes big discovery bottles and be too cumbersome for babies.

These shakers now stay out in our playroom for E to play with whenever he wants.  He has gone back to these every day.  Currently, they are his favorite toy.

Gotta love a good DIY kids toy!
